Requirements For Building Permits

 The Following Construction Activities Require a Building Permit

Primary Building Inspector

  • All new one and two family, and all new multifamily dwellings

  • All residential building additions and/or remodels valued at $50,000 or greater

  • All residential accessory structures larger than 1,000 sq. ft. (total floor area)

    • No permits for Ag ‘use’ buildings - at min A-1 zoning is required

  • All new commercial/industrial projects

  • All commercial/industrial (including remodel/addition) projects valued at $20,000 or greater

  • All electrical services including new and upgrades

  • Double fees for all projects started without permits

  • All work on new homes, additions, remodels and decks must have an updated dwelling contractor certification if not done by the property owner

Once all required documents are submitted, an INSPECTOR WILL REVIEW THEM AND CONTACT YOU WITH A PERMIT FEE.  Permits are not considered issued until payment has been received.

To obtain a building permit from Town of Shields, a zoning land use permit must first be obtained from Dodge County Land Use Department.  Please contact them for all zoning permit requirements.

Dodge County Zoning/Land Use:            920-386-3700

  • Wisconsin Uniform Building Permit Application - Click Here - must be completely filled out

  • Construction plans - 3 hard copies with wall bracing and cross section

  • Site plan showing any setbacks, easements and erosion control as required by code

  • Copy of approved Dodge County Zoning/Land Use Permit

  • If applicable, copy of approved Sanitary Permit from Dodge County

  • Heat loss calculations (new homes only)

  • Driveway Approval - contact Town of Shields Clerk (Julie Klusken) 920-261-7154 or clerk@townofshieldsdcwi.gov

  • New construction, one-two family homes shall submit an online permit using the following link at Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services Division of Industry

  • One copy state approved plans (commercial/industrial only)
